How to Fix a Stretched Collar on a T-Shirt (No Sewing Machine)

6 min read · WORN

To fix a stretched collar on a cotton t-shirt, wet just the collar with hot water, scrunch it back toward its original shape, then dry it with a hairdryer on high or a quick hot-dryer cycle. Heat makes cotton fibers tighten, so a wavy neckline can pull back in. For polyester blends or collars that are really blown out, run a line of elastic thread along the inside with a simple hand stitch. No sewing machine needed.

If you've got a drawer of tees you "can't wear" because the neck went wavy, WORN is being built to show you what you actually wear, so you can tell which ones are worth fixing: Start my outfit diary

Why collars stretch ('bacon neck')

Bacon neck is the internet name for a t-shirt collar that's gone wavy and rippled, like a strip of cooked bacon. It's the #1 reason a comfy tee starts looking sloppy.

What causes it:

The good news: a lot of stretched collars can be fixed at home in 10 minutes.

The heat method for cotton tees

This is how to shrink a t-shirt collar back into shape, and it's the easiest fix. It works best on 100% cotton and cotton-rich tees.

Step by step

  1. Wet the collar only. Run it under hot tap water or dip it in a bowl of hot water. Keep the rest of the tee dry if you can.
  2. Scrunch it in. Gather the ribbing with your fingers, pushing it toward the original, smaller shape. Think "gathering a curtain."
  3. Blast it with heat. Use a hairdryer on its hottest setting, moving it around the collar until it's completely dry. Keep scrunching as you go.
  4. Or use the dryer. Toss the tee in the dryer on high for 10 to 15 minutes if you don't mind the whole shirt shrinking a touch.
  5. Press it flat with a hair straightener or iron if it dries bumpy. A straightener is perfect for the narrow ribbing (more tricks in how to get wrinkles out without an iron).

How well it works

Collar condition Heat method result
Slightly wavy Often fixed completely
Noticeable bacon neck Improved, may need repeating
Very stretched, loose ribbing Temporary improvement; use elastic thread
Polyester or poly-blend Little effect; go straight to elastic thread

Repeat once or twice if it helps but isn't perfect. Heat fixes can loosen again with wear, so redo it after a few washes if needed.

The elastic thread fix

This is how to fix a stretched collar without sewing machine skills, and it lasts much longer than heat alone. It's also the best way to fix a stretched neckline on blends.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Turn the tee inside out.
  2. Knot the end of the elastic thread firmly.
  3. Start at a shoulder seam so the knot is hidden.
  4. Do a simple running stitch (in and out, about 5 mm stitches) all the way around the collar, staying on the inside of the ribbing so it barely shows on the outside.
  5. Gently pull the elastic to gather the collar until it's the size you want. Try the tee on to check.
  6. Knot it off at the shoulder seam and trim.

Pro tip: sew only through the inner layer of the ribbing so no stitches show on the outside.

The quick version

If you really don't want to sew, you can weave the elastic through the existing stitching on the inside of the collar using a safety pin, a bit like putting a drawstring back in a hoodie. It's less neat but surprisingly effective.

Styling a stretched collar

Sometimes the fastest fix is not fixing it at all. How to hide a stretched collar:

When it's time to upcycle the tee

If the collar is torn, the ribbing has lost all elasticity, or the heat method has stopped working, the tee might have a new future.

How to upcycle an old t-shirt

Here's the honest bit: a lot of us keep stretched-out tees "to fix later" while wearing the same two good ones on repeat. It's hard to know which of your tees you'd really miss.

WORN would show you. One photo a day of what you actually wore, one tap, no tagging. After a month it tells you the four things you really wear and the twelve you never touch. If a bacon-neck tee used to be in your top four, it's worth the 10-minute fix. Start my outfit diary

FAQ

Is there a way to fix stretched collars for good?

The most lasting fix is elastic thread sewn around the inside of the collar, which pulls it back and keeps it there. The heat method works well on cotton but can loosen again after a few wears.

What does bacon neck mean?

Bacon neck is slang for a t-shirt collar that's stretched out and wavy, like a strip of bacon. It usually comes from pulling tees on by the collar, hanging them, and hot washing over time.

How do you fix a stretched t-shirt collar without sewing?

Wet the collar with hot water, scrunch it back into shape, and dry it fast with a hairdryer on high or a hot dryer cycle. This shrinks cotton ribbing back in. It works best on 100% cotton tees.

How do you fix a stretched polo collar?

Wet the collar, lay it flat in the right shape, and press it dry with a hair straightener or iron. For a limp polo collar that won't sit up, a light spray of starch before pressing helps it hold.

Can you shrink just the collar of a shirt?

Yes. Wet only the collar with hot water and dry it with a hairdryer on high. The rest of the shirt stays the same size because it doesn't get wet or heated.
