How to Tell if Jeans Are Good Quality (In the Shop or Online)
To tell if jeans are good quality, check four things: the label (mostly or all cotton, with little stretch), the weight (the denim feels dense, not thin), the stitching (tight, even, double rows on stress seams, with rivets at pocket corners), and the hardware (a solid zip and a metal button that's firmly attached). That's how to tell if jeans are good quality in about 60 seconds, whether you're in a mall, a thrift store or scrolling a listing.

Check the fabric label
Start with the tag inside the waistband or side seam.
| What the label says | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| 100% cotton | Classic, durable, molds to you. Stiff at first. |
| 98–99% cotton, 1–2% elastane | Comfort stretch, still holds up well |
| Under ~95% cotton, lots of stretch | Very soft and stretchy, but can bag out and wear thin faster |
| Lots of polyester or viscose | Cheaper feel, often less durable |
100% cotton jeans vs stretch
Rigid 100% cotton is usually the longest lasting. A little stretch (1–2%) is comfy and still decent. Very stretchy "jeggings"-style denim is comfortable, but the elastic fibers can break down over time, so knees bag and fabric thins.
For good quality baggy jeans, rigid or low-stretch cotton is ideal. Baggy fits don't need stretch because they aren't tight.
Feel the weight
Denim weight is usually listed in ounces per square yard. Rough guide:
- Under 12 oz: lightweight. Comfy, good for summer, wears out faster.
- 12–14 oz: midweight. The everyday sweet spot.
- 14 oz+: heavyweight denim. Stiff at first, very durable.
No number? Use your hands
- Grab the fabric. Does it feel dense and substantial, or thin and floppy?
- Hold it to the light. Can you see through it? Thin.
- Scrunch it. Good denim resists and springs back a bit.
It's the same logic as hoodies; our guide on what GSM is a good hoodie explains why weight is such a strong clue.
Seams, stitching and rivets
Flip the jeans inside out. This is where cheap jeans get caught.
Signs of good quality jeans
- Stitches are small, tight and even. No loose threads hanging off.
- Double rows of stitching on the seat, inseam and yoke (the V-shaped panel on the back).
- Seams are finished, not just raw edges that could unravel.
- Rivets (little metal studs) at the front pocket corners, where they take strain.
- Bar tacks (tight zig-zag stitches) at belt loops and the bottom of the fly.
Selvedge denim meaning
If you roll up the hem and see a clean, finished edge with a colored line (often red and white), that's selvedge: denim woven on older, narrower looms. It's often a sign of care and cost, but plenty of great jeans aren't selvedge. Don't pay extra just for the line.
This is where it gets hard: you can check stitching all day, but you still won't know which jeans you'll really wear. Most people buy a pair, wear it twice, and go back to the old faithful. WORN is being built to catch that: one photo of your outfit a day, no tagging, and after a month it shows the four things you really wear and the twelve you never touch. Start my outfit diary
Pockets, zip and waistband
- Pocket bags (the inside of the front pockets): thick cotton is good. Thin, papery pocket bags rip early.
- Zip: runs smoothly, feels solid, has a sturdy metal pull. A cheap zip is often the first thing to break.
- Button: metal, firmly attached, doesn't wiggle.
- Waistband: stitched straight and even, holds its shape when you pull it.
- Belt loops: well attached with reinforced stitching.
- Legs: hold them up by the waist. If one leg twists noticeably, the fabric was cut off-grain and may keep twisting after washing.
Checking quality online and when thrifting
How to check jeans online
- Read the fabric composition. It's usually under "details" or "materials."
- Look for denim weight in ounces. Many good denim brands list it.
- Zoom in on product photos for stitching, rivets and the hardware.
- Check the return policy before buying so you can inspect them in hand.
- Read reviews for fit and "after a few washes" comments, not just stars.
Thrifting jeans tips
Thrift stores are honestly one of the best places for good quality cheap jeans. Older jeans were often made with heavier, rigid cotton.
- Check the crotch and inner thighs for thinning (hold them to the light).
- Check the hems and back pockets for wear.
- Tug gently on belt loops and the button.
- Try them on. Vintage sizing can be very different.
- Slightly too long? That's fixable. Too tight in the thighs? Not really. Old jeans that don't fit your legs can still become jorts.
Price vs quality: what's worth paying for
Are expensive jeans worth it? Sometimes. Price is a weak signal on its own.
Worth paying for:
- Heavier, mostly cotton denim
- Reinforced stitching and rivets
- A fit you'll wear constantly
Not always worth paying for:
- Brand name alone
- Heavy pre-distressing (it's pre-worn fabric, which means less life left)
- Trendy washes you'll be over in a season
Where to buy good quality jeans
Instead of naming one store, use the checklist wherever you shop: department stores, dedicated denim brands, thrift and resale apps. Men's jeans good quality and good quality jeans women's follow the same rules. The fabric and stitching tell you more than the logo.
Find out which jeans deserve a replacement

FAQ
What are the signs of good quality jeans?
Mostly cotton fabric, a dense feel, tight double stitching on stress seams, rivets at pocket corners, a smooth sturdy zip and thick pocket bags. Legs that hang straight without twisting are a good sign too.
Are stretchy jeans good quality?
A little stretch (1–2% elastane) can be both comfortable and durable. Very stretchy jeans may bag out and thin faster, so expect a shorter life.
How can you tell if jeans are good quality online?
Check the fabric composition and denim weight, zoom in on the stitching and hardware, and read reviews about how they hold up after washing. Buy where returns are easy.
Where can I find good quality cheap jeans?
Thrift and resale stores are a great option, since older jeans often used heavier cotton. Use the same checklist: fabric, weight, stitching and wear spots.
Do good quality jeans last longer?
Generally yes, especially heavier, mostly cotton jeans with reinforced seams. How you wash them matters too: cold washes, inside out, and air drying help.
