How to Tuck a Hoodie: French Tuck, Band Tuck and More

6 min read · WORN

To tuck a hoodie, push just the front few inches of the hem into your waistband (the French tuck), or fold the whole ribbed band up and under itself so it sits at your waist (the band tuck). Both take seconds and stop a big hoodie from swallowing you. The trick with how to tuck a hoodie is to tuck less than you would a shirt, because hoodie fabric is thick.

If you've got hoodies you never wear because they "look too baggy," WORN is being built to show you which ones you actually reach for, from one photo a day: Start my outfit diary

Why tuck a hoodie at all

A hoodie is the most-worn thing in a lot of closets. But an untucked oversized hoodie plus baggy jeans can make the whole outfit one shapeless blob. A tuck:

Should you tuck in a hoodie? Not always. But knowing how gives you options.

The front (French) tuck

The French tuck hoodie move is the easiest. It's the same idea as the "how to properly tuck a shirt" half tuck, adjusted for thick fabric.

How to front tuck a hoodie

  1. Put on your bottoms first, with a belt if they have loops.
  2. Pinch the center front of the hoodie hem, about a hand's width.
  3. Push just that bit into the front of your waistband, 1 to 2 inches deep. Not more.
  4. Pull slightly up so the fabric blouses over the waistband.
  5. Leave the sides and back loose.

Too bulky? Tuck only the hem ribbing, not the fabric above it.

Off-center tuck

Same thing, but tuck just to one side of the zip or kangaroo pocket. It's a bit more relaxed and very Pinterest.

The band tuck

This is the move for how to make a hoodie look cropped without cutting it.

How to band tuck a hoodie

  1. Grab the ribbed band at the bottom of the hoodie.
  2. Fold it up and under, inside the hoodie, all the way around.
  3. Adjust so it sits at your natural waist or the top of your high-waisted bottoms.
  4. Tug the fabric above so it drapes evenly.

It works best on hoodies that are long but not super wide. On a massive hoodie, the band can pop back out, so try a hair tie inside at the back to hold the fold.

How to tie a hoodie

No tuck? You can gather the back hem into a small knot or hair-tie it, then fold it up inside. Or tie a hoodie around your waist by the sleeves, which is a whole other (very 90s) look.

This is where it gets real: you can learn every tuck, but it's still hard to remember which hoodie-and-bottoms combos you actually liked enough to repeat. WORN is being built to remember for you. One photo a day of what you wore, and after a month it tells you the four things you really wear, the twelve you never touch, and what to wear tomorrow. Start my outfit diary

The side tuck

Tuck just one side of the hem into your waistband, near your hip. It's asymmetric on purpose.

Tuck-and-blouse (full tuck)

Tuck the entire hem in all around, then pull the hoodie up so the fabric drapes over your waistband evenly. This one only works with thinner hoodies and high-waisted bottoms. Thick fleece fully tucked usually looks bulky. That's one of the times not to tuck.

What to wear it with

Tuck Best bottoms Vibe
Front (French) tuck Straight or baggy jeans, cargos Everyday, school, uni
Band tuck High-waisted jeans, wide-leg trousers, skirts Cropped, balanced
Side tuck Straight jeans, belted trousers Relaxed, slightly edgy
Tuck-and-blouse High-waisted trousers, pleated skirts Dressed up

How to style a hoodie with jeans

Front tuck plus straight or baggy jeans, a belt and clean sneakers. It's the most-searched combo for a reason: it just works.

How to wear a hoodie with cargo pants

Band tuck or front tuck so you can see the cargo pockets. With untucked baggy hoodies and cargos, you lose all the shape.

How to tuck a hoodie into a skirt

Band tuck at the waist, then a mini or midi skirt, tights or bare legs, boots or chunky sneakers. Very cozy-chic.

How to dress up a hoodie

For guys and for girls

Tucking isn't gendered. Guys usually go front tuck with jeans or cargos; girls often band tuck with high-waisted pieces. Both work for both.

When not to tuck

If your hoodies are too long everywhere, even untucked, there are more tricks in how to make a shirt smaller without sewing.

Remember the fits that actually worked

WORN is being built to remember your outfits instead of scoring them, so the tuck you loved last Tuesday doesn't get forgotten. Take one photo a day in one tap, and after a month you'd see which hoodies you really wear and what to wear tomorrow from your own clothes. Photos stay private by default.

FAQ

How do you tuck a hoodie without it looking bulky?

Tuck just the front hem ribbing, 1 to 2 inches, and pull it up slightly so it drapes. Or fold the band up and under itself. Avoid fully tucking thick hoodies, which adds bulk at the waist.

What is a French tuck hoodie?

It's a front tuck: only the center front of the hoodie hem goes into your waistband while the sides and back stay loose. It gives the outfit shape and shows off your jeans or belt.

How do you make a hoodie look cropped without cutting it?

Use the band tuck: fold the ribbed hem up and under itself all the way around, so it sits at your waist. A hair tie inside at the back helps keep it in place on bigger hoodies.

Should guys tuck in their hoodies?

It's totally optional. A front tuck with straight jeans or cargos is a clean, easy look for guys, and leaving it untucked works for a relaxed fit. Choose based on the bottoms and how oversized the hoodie is.

How do you style an oversized hoodie for school?

Front tuck it into straight or baggy jeans, add clean sneakers, and push the sleeves up slightly. For colder days, layer a jacket over it and keep the tuck so the outfit still has shape.
