How to Make a T Shirt Into a Tank Top (No-Sew Options)
To make a t shirt into a tank top, lay the tee flat, cut off the sleeves just inside the seam, then shape the armholes deeper (for a muscle tank) or cut the back into a racerback, and stretch the raw edges so they curl. No sewing needed, because t-shirt jersey doesn't fray. That's how to make a t shirt into a tank top in under ten minutes with just scissors.

Quick vocab: a "muscle tank" or "cutoff" is a tee with the sleeves removed and big armholes. UK and Canadian readers might also call a tank top a vest (in the UK, "vest" usually means a sleeveless undershirt, not a waistcoat).
Pick the tee
Which t shirts are worth converting?
- Old event, team or gym tees you never wear as tees. Top choice.
- Tees with pit stains or damaged sleeves. The sleeves are going anyway.
- Oversized tees make the best muscle tanks, with a relaxed drape.
- 100% cotton or cotton-heavy blends curl nicely at the edge.
- Avoid: tees with a print that wraps onto the sleeves, unless you're fine losing part of it.
Before you start, fold the tee in half lengthwise so you only cut once and both sides match.
Muscle tank cut (the classic cutoff)
This is the gym tank everyone's seen. Also the easiest.
How to cut sleeves off a shirt
- Lay the tee flat and fold it in half, lining up the sleeves.
- Cut the sleeve off just inside the shoulder seam. Cutting inside the seam means the edge can curl instead of staying stiff.
- Unfold. You now have a basic sleeveless tee.
How to cut arm holes bigger
- From the shoulder, draw a curve down the side, ending 3 to 6 inches below the original armpit. Deeper = more "gym," shallower = more everyday.
- Cut through both layers along the curve.
- Try it on. Go deeper in small cuts if you want.
For a real cut off tee for guys, some people also cut the neckband off. Cut just below the collar seam and stretch it.
Racerback cut
A racerback tank has straps that come together between the shoulder blades. Great for runs, dance, gym and summer.
- Do the muscle tank cut first, but shallower.
- Flip the tee so the back faces up.
- Cut a wide curve from each armhole toward the center back, leaving a strip of fabric 2 to 4 inches wide down the middle.
- Grab that center strip and wrap a small piece of leftover fabric around it to gather it (knot it tight). That's the classic no-sew racerback.
Here's the thing: you'll convert three tees into tanks and have zero idea a month later which one you actually live in. Memory is terrible at this. WORN is being built to remember instead. One photo of what you wore each day, no tagging, and after a month it shows the four things you really wear and the twelve you never touch. Start my outfit diary
Scoop-neck tank cut
A softer, more fitted version that looks like a store-bought tank top for girls or anyone who wants a cleaner shape.
- Cut the sleeves off inside the seam.
- Cut the neckband off and draw a lower, rounder scoop on the front, about 2 to 4 inches below where the old neckline was. Keep the back higher.
- Narrow the shoulders to straps 1.5 to 2.5 inches wide by cutting from the neckline toward the armhole.
- Shape the armholes into a smooth curve.
- Stretch every raw edge to roll it.
How to make a tank top that fits closer
Pinch the extra fabric at the sides while wearing it inside out, mark it, and cut both side seams in a straight line down. Then tie the front and back pieces together in little knots every few inches for a no-sew side seam. It's a very DIY look, but it's cute.
No-sew finishing
Make t shirt into tank top no sew by using the fabric itself:
- Stretch the edges. Pull each raw edge gently and it rolls into a neat tube.
- Fringe the hem. Cut 3-inch vertical slits along the bottom, stretch each strip.
- Knot the hem at the side for a slightly cropped tank.
- Lace-up sides: cut small slits down the sides and weave a strip through.
- Crop it using the method in our guide on how to make a crop top from a t shirt.
Scraps
Keep the sleeves. They make headbands, hair ties, or ties for the racerback.
Tank top tips before you cut
- Fold the tee in half so both armholes match.
- Cut less than you think, try it on, then cut more.
- Use sharp fabric scissors; blunt ones leave a jagged edge.
- Do the first one on a tee you truly don't care about.
Wearing your new tank
- Gym: muscle tank + shorts. Deep armholes help with airflow.
- Summer: scoop tank + jorts made from old jeans + sneakers.
- Layering: a muscle tank over a fitted long-sleeve, or a scoop tank under an open shirt.
- Festival: racerback + cargo shorts. Add a bleached pattern from our how to bleach a hoodie guide if you want it custom.
- School: check the dress code first; some schools don't allow deep armholes.
Get a record of what your new tanks earn
Converting a tee is a small win. Knowing it actually gets worn is the bigger one. WORN is a planned outfit diary: one photo a day, no cataloguing your wardrobe first, and after a month it tells you what you really wear. It isn't built yet; add your email and you'll get one message when it opens.
FAQ
How do you make a t shirt into a tank top without sewing?
Cut the sleeves off just inside the seam, deepen the armholes, and stretch the raw edges so they curl. Jersey doesn't fray, so no hemming is needed.
How do you cut a shirt into a gym tank?
Cut off the sleeves, then cut the armholes 3 to 6 inches deeper than the original armpit. Cut off the collar too for a classic cutoff look.
How do you make a racerback tank top from a t shirt?
Cut curves from each armhole toward the center back, leaving a strip down the middle, then gather that strip with a knotted piece of fabric.
What kind of t shirt is best for a DIY tank top?
A cotton or cotton-heavy tee that's slightly oversized. Old event tees and gym tees you never wear are perfect.
Is a vest the same as a tank top?
In the UK, a "vest" often means a sleeveless top or undershirt, which is what Americans call a tank top. In the US, a vest is usually a sleeveless layer worn over a shirt.
