What to Wear in 0 Degree Celsius Weather: Stay Warm, Look Good
What to wear in 0 degree Celsius weather: a thin base layer (thermal or long-sleeve), a warm mid layer (sweater, fleece or hoodie), and a windproof, insulated coat, plus full-length pants, warm socks, closed boots, and a hat, scarf and gloves. Zero degrees is freezing point (32F), so the goal is trapping heat in layers, not wearing the single thickest thing you own.
If your mornings go "grab the puffer, still freezing, no idea why," WORN would log what you actually wore each day so you can see which combos really kept you warm. Start my outfit diary
What 0 degrees feels like with wind and damp
Zero on the thermometer can feel wildly different:
- Dry, sunny, still (Prairies, clear winter day): crisp and honestly kind of nice.
- Damp and grey (UK, coastal Canada): a sneaky cold that gets into your bones.
- Windy: feels like minus 5 or worse. Wind chill is not a vibe.
- Slushy: your feet become the whole story.
Is 0 degrees cold? Yes. For UK readers it's a properly cold day. For Canadian readers it's a mild winter day, which tells you everything about Canada.
The three-layer system
Every freezing weather outfit uses the same structure. Learn it once and you can dress for anything from what to wear in 0-10 degree weather to deep minus temps.
| Layer | Job | From your closet |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Sits on skin, keeps warmth in | Thermal top, fitted long-sleeve, leggings under jeans |
| Mid | Traps heat | Wool or knit sweater, fleece, hoodie, quarter-zip |
| Outer | Blocks wind and wet | Puffer, parka, lined wool coat |
Rules that actually matter:
- Fitted underneath, looser on top. A fitted base keeps heat close. A bulky base makes everything above it feel tight.
- Cotton is fine for a short walk, not for a long day outside. If you get sweaty, it stays damp. For long days outside, wool or synthetic base layers hold up better.
- Your outer layer should close at the neck. A coat that's open at the top lets all your heat out.
- Unzip indoors. Overheating in class and then walking out damp is how you end up colder.
0C outfits for school
A 0 degree outfit for school has to survive the walk or bus stop and then not cook you in the classroom.
0 degree outfits for girls
- Thermal top + chunky knit + straight jeans with leggings underneath + long puffer + winter boots.
- Long-sleeve + hoodie + cargos + parka + beanie.
- Turtleneck + cardigan + wide-leg trousers + wool coat + scarf.
0 degree outfits for guys
What to wear in 0 degree weather, men's version:
- Thermal + hoodie + jeans + puffer + boots + beanie.
- Long-sleeve + fleece quarter-zip + cargos + parka.
- Tee + heavy flannel + sweatshirt + lined jacket (when it's dry and you run warm).
What pants to wear in 0 degree weather? Jeans are fine for a short commute, especially with leggings or long johns underneath. Cords, lined cargos and wool trousers are warmer. Thin joggers let the wind straight through.
The part nobody tells you: you only figure out your warmest combo by noticing what you reached for on the coldest days. That's hard to remember in February. WORN's idea is one photo a day, no tagging, so after a month you'd see which pieces you actually wear when it's freezing. Start my outfit diary
0C outfits for going out
The going-out problem: nobody wants a puffer in the photos.
- Coat you'll check: wear the nice outfit underneath (top + trousers, or a dress with thick tights) and a long wool coat or puffer you'll hand over at the door.
- Leather jacket plan: only if you're going from car to door. Add a hoodie underneath for the walk and ditch it in the car.
- Knit everything: a fitted knit top + mini skirt + opaque tights + knee boots is warm and still looks like a night out.
- Guys: knit sweater + dark jeans + wool overcoat + boots. Warm, clean, done.
Tights hack: a pair of thin thermal leggings under ripped or wide-leg jeans is invisible and makes a massive difference.

Shoes, socks and accessories
What shoes to wear in 0 degree weather:
- Winter boots with grip for ice and slush. This is the one thing worth getting right.
- Leather boots (Chelsea, combat) for dry, cold days in the city.
- Trainers only if it's dry and you're not outside long, and add thick socks.
- Never canvas in slush. Wet feet at zero degrees is miserable.
Accessories do a lot of work:
- Beanie: keeps your head and ears warm. Instantly makes a basic outfit look more intentional.
- Scarf: closes the gap at your neck.
- Gloves or mitts: mitts are warmer, gloves let you use your phone. Touchscreen gloves are the compromise.
- Wool or thermal socks: better than two pairs of thin ones, which can squeeze your feet and make them colder.
When it drops below zero
What to wear in below 0 degree weather (minus temps):
- -1 to -10C: same three layers, but upgrade the mid (thicker knit or fleece) and add a thermal bottom layer.
- -10 to -20C: proper insulated parka, hood up, face covered with a scarf or neck warmer. Canada knows.
- Below -20C: limit how long you're outside. Cover skin. Listen to local weather warnings, not your aesthetic.

FAQ
What is 0 degrees Celsius in Fahrenheit?
0C is 32F, the freezing point of water. So US guides for 30 to 35 degree weather will give you similar outfits.
Is a hoodie enough in 0 degree weather?
Not on its own. A hoodie is a great mid layer, but at zero you need a windproof coat over it and something on your head and hands. On a short dry walk you might get away with it, but you'll feel it.
What to wear in 0-10 degree weather?
At the warmer end (5 to 10C) a jumper plus a light or medium jacket works. Closer to zero, switch to the full three-layer system with a proper coat. Our 10 degree Celsius guide covers the milder side.
What shoes to wear in zero degree weather?
Waterproof boots with good grip are best, especially if there's slush or ice. Leather boots or leather trainers work on dry days. Pair them with wool or thermal socks.
How do I stay warm without looking bulky?
Use thin, fitted base layers instead of thick ones, choose one warm mid layer instead of two chunky ones, and let your coat do the heavy lifting. A long, straight-cut coat looks sleeker than a short boxy one.
