Does Project 333 Include Underwear? What Counts
No, Project 333 does not include underwear. Under the challenge's rules, underwear, sleepwear, in-home loungewear, workout clothes worn only for workouts, and sentimental jewelry you never take off all sit outside your 33 items. Shoes, bags, outerwear, accessories and other jewelry do count.
If you're counting your 33 but can't tell which of your pieces you actually wear, WORN is being built to answer that for you: Start my outfit diary

What does not count
These are the items you can keep as many of as you need.
Underwear, bras and socks
Underwear is excluded outright. Bras fall under underwear too. Socks and tights aren't always spelled out, but most people doing the challenge treat them the same way, since they're worn under your outfit rather than as part of it.
Sleepwear and loungewear
Pajamas don't count. Neither does loungewear you only wear around the house. The key word is "only." If those sweatpants go to school or the store, they're part of your outfit, so they count.
Workout clothes
Gym clothes are free as long as you wear them only to work out. Sports bras, running shorts and training tops stay out of your 33 if they stay in the gym.
Sentimental jewelry
A wedding ring, a religious necklace, or a piece from a grandparent that you never take off doesn't count. Jewelry you switch in and out does.
What does count
Everything you'd put on to leave the house, apart from the items above:
- Clothing: tops, bottoms, dresses, sweaters
- Outerwear: coats, rain jackets, denim jackets, blazers
- Shoes: every pair, including sandals and boots
- Accessories: bags, backpacks, scarves, hats, belts, sunglasses
- Jewelry: earrings, necklaces, watches and rings you switch around
For a full sample list, see our guide to the Project 333 rules, which includes a 33-item example you can copy.
Gray areas: gym clothes, pajamas, jewelry
Real life is messier than a table. Here's how to handle the questions that come up most.
"I wear leggings to the gym and to school."
Then they count. The workout exception only covers clothes worn only to work out. A simple fix: keep one pair as gym-only, and count another pair in your 33.
"My hoodie is also my pajama top."
If you wear it out of the house, it counts. If it truly never leaves your room, it's loungewear.
"What about a school uniform?"
The rules weren't written with school uniforms in mind. Many students treat required uniform pieces like workout clothes (worn only for one purpose) and apply Project 333 to their weekend and after-school clothes. Pick your rule before you start.
"Does a swimsuit count?"
It isn't named in the rules. Many people treat it like workout gear if it's only worn for swimming. If it doubles as a top, count it.
"Do rain boots or snow boots count?"
Yes, shoes count. Some people in snowy places allow one pair of weather-only boots as a personal exception. That's your call, but write it down.
"Do I count a matching set as one item or two?"
Count each piece that you could wear on its own. A matching sweatsuit you wear out of the house is two items. A suit you only ever wear together is often counted as two as well, but some people count it as one. Decide and write it down.
"What about a phone case, hair ties or a mask?"
These aren't clothing or accessories in the fashion sense. Most people don't count them.
A quick count checklist
Use this yes/no test on every item you're unsure about. It works like a mini quiz.
- Do I wear it outside the house as part of an outfit? If no, it probably doesn't count.
- Is it underwear, sleepwear or gym-only? If yes, it doesn't count.
- Is it jewelry I never take off for sentimental reasons? If yes, it doesn't count.
- Is it shoes, a bag, a coat or an accessory? If yes, it counts.
- Still unsure? Count it. Being strict makes the challenge work better.
The part the checklist can't do
Knowing what counts is easy. Knowing which of your pieces deserve a spot is harder. Most people choose their 33 based on memory, and memory tends to be kinder to the outfits we planned than to the ones we actually wore.
Choosing 33 from memory is mostly guesswork. WORN is planned as a private outfit diary: one photo a day of what you wore, one tap, with no tagging. After a month it shows the few pieces you really wear and the ones you never touch, which is the list you want before you fill your 33. Start my outfit diary
Guys doing the challenge can see a full list in Project 333 for men, and the same underwear and gym rules apply.
Stop guessing what goes in your 33
Now you know that Project 333 doesn't include underwear, the next question is which 33 pieces deserve a spot. WORN is on a waitlist and gets built only if enough people sign up. Add your email in the next minute to register your interest.
FAQ
Does Project 333 include shoes?
Yes, shoes count in Project 333. Every pair, including sneakers, boots and sandals, takes one of your 33 spots. The only common exception people make is gym-only sneakers.
Does Project 333 include jewelry?
Most jewelry counts, including earrings, necklaces and watches you switch around. The exception is sentimental jewelry you never take off, like a wedding ring. Those stay outside your 33.
Does Project 333 include pajamas?
No. Sleepwear doesn't count, and neither does loungewear worn only at home. If a piece leaves the house, count it.
Does Project 333 include gym clothes?
Workout clothes don't count as long as you wear them only to work out. If your leggings or joggers also go to school or the store, they count. Keeping a gym-only set makes this simple.
Is there a Project 333 wardrobe list PDF?
You don't need one to start. The count table in this post works as a checklist, and you can copy the sample list in our Project 333 rules guide into any notes app. The creator's site also shares resources for the challenge.
