How to Unshrink a Hoodie (What Works and What's a Myth)
To unshrink a hoodie, soak it for about 30 minutes in lukewarm water mixed with a generous squeeze of hair conditioner (or baby shampoo), then press out the water without wringing, gently stretch it back to size, and dry it flat. It works best on cotton and cotton-heavy blends and can win back a bit of length and width. It won't undo severe shrinkage, and it does very little for polyester.

Can you really unshrink a hoodie?
Partly. Let's be honest about it, because a lot of "unshrink clothes hacks" oversell.
Why hoodies shrink: cotton fibers are stretched during manufacturing. Heat and agitation (hot wash, tumble dryer) let them relax and pull tighter. Fleece-backed hoodies can also get denser and a bit felted.
What unshrinking does: conditioner coats and softens the fibers so they're easier to stretch back out while wet. You're physically reshaping the hoodie and letting it dry in that shape.
Realistic expectations:
| Fabric | Can you unshrink it? | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 100% cotton hoodie | Yes, partly | Best results; can regain some length and width |
| Cotton-heavy blend (80/20) | Yes, partly | Decent results, a bit less than pure cotton |
| Cotton-poly 50/50 | A little | Some improvement, mostly in length |
| Mostly polyester | Barely | Polyester doesn't really shrink or stretch back; heat damage is often permanent |
| Wool or knit sweater | Sometimes | Gentle stretching helps; felted wool usually can't be reversed |
Check the care label for fabric content before you start. It tells you what's realistic.
The conditioner soak, step by step
This is how to unshrink a sweater with conditioner, and it's the same method for a cotton hoodie or sweatshirt.
What you need
- A sink, bucket or bathtub
- Lukewarm water (not hot)
- 2 to 3 tablespoons of hair conditioner or baby shampoo
- 2 big towels
- A flat surface to dry on
The steps
- Fill the sink with lukewarm water and mix in the conditioner until it's cloudy.
- Submerge the hoodie completely. Push it down so it's fully soaked.
- Soak for about 30 minutes. Gently squeeze the fabric a few times so the mix gets into the fibers.
- Drain, don't rinse. Leaving a little conditioner in helps the fibers stay soft while you stretch.
- Press out the water. Roll the hoodie in a towel and press down on it like a burrito. Do not wring it.
Stretching and drying it flat
This is the part that actually does the work.
- Lay it flat on a dry towel. Line up the seams.
- Stretch gently, section by section.
- Body: pull the hem down toward your knees, holding the shoulders.
- Width: pull side to side across the chest.
- Sleeves: hold the shoulder seam and pull the cuff away.
- Pull a little, hold, move on. Don't yank hard in one spot or you'll warp it.
- Weigh it down at the hem and cuffs with books or water bottles to hold the stretch.
- Let it dry flat, turning it over after a few hours. Keep it away from direct heat.
- Re-stretch halfway through if it's pulling back.
Extra trick: wear it damp
When it's slightly damp (not wet), put it on and move around for 15 to 20 minutes. Your body stretches it exactly where you need it. This is a popular how to unshrink a sweater reddit tip, and it genuinely helps with a hoodie that's tight across the shoulders.
Once it's dry, rinse lightly or just wash it as normal on cold if it feels too soft or slippery.
Cotton vs fleece vs polyester blends
How to unshrink a cotton hoodie
Your best case. Do the full soak, stretch properly, and repeat once more if it's still short. Two rounds usually beats one aggressive one.
How to unshrink a fleece hoodie
Fleece-lined cotton blends respond okay. The fuzzy inside can get flattened, so after drying, brush it lightly with a clean hairbrush to fluff it back up.
How to unshrink a polyester hoodie
Polyester is plastic-based, so it doesn't shrink the way cotton does. If a poly hoodie is suddenly tighter, it may have melted or warped slightly from high dryer heat. That's usually permanent. A light stretch while damp might help the fit a tiny bit, but manage your expectations.
How to unshrink a shirt or tee
Same method, less time: a 15 to 20 minute soak is plenty for a cotton t-shirt. Pay extra attention to the length, and be gentle around the collar. (If the collar is the part that's wrecked, see how to fix a stretched collar.)
If it won't come back: restyle or pass it on
Sometimes a hoodie is just smaller now. That doesn't mean it's trash.
Shrunk hoodie ideas
- Wear it as a cropped hoodie. Pair with high-waisted wide-legs or baggy jeans. Ideas in what to wear with a hoodie.
- Layer it. A slightly small hoodie under a denim jacket or bomber looks intentional.
- Crop it for real. Cut the hem to a clean line. Sweatshirt fleece doesn't fray much, so you can leave the edge raw.
- Turn it into a vest. Cut the sleeves off at the seam for a gym layer.
- Pass it on to a younger sibling, cousin or friend, or bring it to a clothing swap.
The hard question is whether you'd really wear it again. Most of us keep a shrunk hoodie "for when I fix it" and then... never do.
WORN would answer that with actual evidence. One photo a day of what you wore, one tap, no tagging. After a month it would show you the four things you really wear and the twelve you never touch. How to never shrink one again
- Wash cold. 30°C / cold setting is enough for most hoodies.
- Turn it inside out to protect the print and outer fibers.
- Skip the tumble dryer or use the lowest heat. The dryer is the #1 hoodie shrinker.
- Air-dry flat or over a rack, not hung by the hood, which can stretch it weirdly.
- Read the care label the first time you wash anything new.
- Buy one size up if you love a hoodie and it's 100% cotton and not pre-shrunk.

FAQ
Is there a way to unshrink clothes for real?
Partly. A conditioner or baby shampoo soak relaxes cotton fibers so you can stretch them back while wet. It can recover some size on cotton, less on blends, and very little on polyester or felted wool.
How do you unshrink a sweater from the dryer?
Soak it in lukewarm water with conditioner for 30 minutes, press out the water in a towel, then stretch it gently back to shape and dry it flat. Wool that has felted (gone thick and stiff) usually can't be fully reversed.
Does conditioner actually unshrink clothes?
It helps. Conditioner softens the fibers so they stretch more easily without damage. The stretching and drying flat is what actually restores the size, so don't skip that part.
Can you unshrink a hoodie in the dryer?
No, heat only makes it shrink more. Always stretch and dry an unshrunk hoodie flat at room temperature.
How much can you unshrink a cotton hoodie?
It depends on how much it shrank and the fabric. Mild shrinkage on 100% cotton can often be mostly recovered with one or two rounds. Severe shrinkage usually only comes back partway.
